You may well have watched all of it, suppressing your horror and self-loathing for just one more minute episode. Only then do they see each other for the first time — one month before their wedding day. Take the close confines and body-con of Love Island, the sensorial restriction of Dating in the Dark, the shonky pseudoscience of Naked Attraction , the prom-y pageantry of The Bachelor franchise and the stakes of Married at First Sight. Throw in Nick and Vanessa Lachey as hosts and a group of extremely free-feeling Americans some with acoustic guitars and you have Love Is Blind. In a crowded field, Love Is Blind is reality television at its most compelling and its most repellent; an unparalleled push-pull of programming that you can hardly bring yourself to watch through splayed fingers. For eight straight hours. The idea — we are regularly reminded, especially by the participant who is a scientist — is to test the working hypothesis of the title: is love blind?

In The Dating Game host Jim Lange stands on stage — a floral motif bedecking the set behind him. Then he points to his left to present the eligible bachelors who want to date the woman of the hour. And Lange subsequently introduces the first suitor as Rodney Alcala, whose appearance on the popular ABC show feels chilling once you become aware that this man is in fact a prolific serial killer. However, most experts agree that a person dubbed as such derives some kind of psychological pleasure from committing murder.

Such individuals tend to act on their own, too, and they also each kill more than one person over a time frame spanning in excess of 30 days. And it was there, in , that Jack the Ripper selected his victims, murdering a minimum of five women — all of whom are thought to have been sex workers.

As the well-worn adage goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Yet when it comes to online dating, making a split-second decision about whether to swipe right or left often has to do with a quick judgment based on appearance. That superficiality is killing a lot of singles, says Adam Cohen Aslatei, former managing director of gay dating app Chappy and founder of a new dating app called S’More.

Or, he says, at least it’s keeping a lot of them from finding love. S’More, which is free on iOS, blurs out profile photos, forcing daters to focus first on the interests listed. If something resonates — like education, current mood, a voice clip, even a zodiac sign — you can wink at that attribute on another person’s profile. The more you interact, the less blurry the photo becomes.

Eventually, you’ll be able to send a message. The person on the other side can’t open the message until they’ve gone to your profile and winked around too. What’s more, S’More only serves up five profiles each day. This change in the typical online dating process, Cohen Aslatei hopes, will lead to more meaningful interactions among daters.

Ben Berman thinks there’s a problem with the way we date. Not in real life—he’s happily engaged, thank you very much—but online. He’s watched too many friends joylessly swipe through apps, seeing the same profiles over and over, without any luck in finding love. The algorithms that power those apps seem to have problems too, trapping users in a cage of their own preferences. So Berman, a game designer in San Francisco, decided to build his own dating app, sort of.

Monster Match, created in collaboration with designer Miguel Perez and Mozilla, borrows the basic architecture of a dating app. You create a profile from a cast of cute illustrated monsters , swipe to match with other monsters, and chat to set up dates. But here’s the twist: As you swipe, the game reveals some of the more insidious consequences of dating app algorithms. The field of choice becomes narrow, and you wind up seeing the same monsters again and again.

Monster Match is not really a dating app, but rather a game to show the problem with dating apps.

An absolute equal mix of cringe and terror, wrapped into a date. The result? A beautiful summation of physical chemistry, gorgeous choreography, and a pinch of vain relief that the person on the other end of that dance routine isn’t ugly. And it all happens at a sweeping romantic destination, like a boardwalk or an observatory or an Arby’s just kidding, that’s my dream location.
